April 15, 2010, is a date the United Football League believes will be
remembered as a landmark moment in the history of football in the state
of Nebraska and significantly in the city of Omaha.
On a sunny spring
afternoon, UFL Commissioner Michael Huyghue announced that the
fledgling football league would welcome its first expansion team to play
during the second season and the people of Omaha embraced the franchise
from that moment forward.
Midwest native Jeff Jagodzinski, former
head coach of Boston College and offensive coordinator of the Green Bay
Packers was unveiled as the man who would lead the soon to be named
Omaha Nighthawks when their season kicks off in the fall of 2010.
The
Nighthawks will open their campaign at Rosenblatt Stadium against the
Hartford Colonials on Friday, September 24 and the home fans, who
already number in the thousands and are as passionate as any in the
nation, will see their team in action again a week later on Saturday,
October 2 against the Sacramento Mountain Lions.
The five-team UFL,
which plans to expand to eight teams in 2011 and beyond that in future
years, also includes the reigning champion Las Vegas Locos, who defeated
the Florida Tuskers 20-17 in the inaugural 2009 Championship Game.
