MS Society Honors Omaha Steaks/Simon Family
The National MS Society is proud to announce the 2008 recipient of the Norman Cohn Hope Award is Omaha Steaks/Simon Family. 

This award was presented to the Simon Family at the 2008 Dinner of Champions on August 21, 2008 at the downtown Omaha Hilton.

The MS Dinner of Champions is the premier gala event of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society honoring many of America’s most prestigious corporate leaders and corporations. Howard Cosell and Frank Gifford founded the MS Dinner of Champions in 1972 and today this fundraiser is one of the country’s most celebrated and popular testimonial events held in select cities throughout the country.

Special guest speaker for the evening will be Jack Llewellyn, a world-renowned sports psychology consultant, speaker, and corporate coach. Dr. Jack Llewellyn is founder and president of the Atlanta-based Center for Winning Performance. He also has MS.

AIIM’s Cornhusker Chapter Welcomes 2008 Board of Directors

The AIIM’s Cornhusker Chapter held their first board meeting on July 16, 2008. At this meeting, their new Board of Directors were announced:  President, Larry Fritz; Vice-President/President-Elect, Bill Lang; Secretary, Tammy Kaup; Treasurer, Brian M. Kirkpatrick; Communications, Jennifer Bartelt; Membership, Patrick Barrett; Program Chair, Douglas Belsaas; Program Committee, Dave Hess; and Program Committee, Rhonda Wagner. AIIM is the international authority on Enterprise Content Management (ECM), the technologies used to capture, manage, store, preserve, and deliver content and documents related to organizational processes. ECM tools and technologies provide solutions to help users with the four Cs of business:  continuity, collaboration, compliance, and costs.

For over 60 years, AIIM has been the leading non-profit organization focused on helping users to understand the challenges associated with managing documents, content, records, and business processes. Today, AIIM is international in scope, independent, implementation-focused, and, as the representative of the entire ECM industry - including users, suppliers, and the channel as the industry’s intermediary. As a neutral and unbiased source of information, AIIM serves the needs of its members and the industry by providing educational opportunities, professional development, reference and knowledge resources, networking events, and industry advocacy. Light the Night’s Annual Walk for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Announced
Tony Simunaci, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Mutual of Omaha Bank, will lead this year’s annual walk Light the Night for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  Tony has been with Mutual of Omaha Bank since its inception in November 2007.  Tony Simunaci is familiar with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society due to a family member being diagnosed with a blood cancer.  Tony’s sister lost her battle 4 years ago.  He feels compelled to not have other families experience this loss and is dedicated to helping raise awareness to find a cure and improve the quality of life for patients and their families.  

Light the Night is a national fundraising campaign to commemorate and celebrate lives touched by cancer.  Last year alone, the walk raised 40 million to help advance the Society’s mission of cancer research and services to patients.   This year the walk will be held on Thursday, September 18th at Heartland of America Park in Downtown Omaha with registration starting at 6:00 p.m.

YWCA Omaha Names New Chief Executive Officer
YWCA Omaha has named Natalia Peart, Ph.D., as the organization’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).  She replaces Peg Harriott, who led the organization for the previous nine years. Anne Steinhoff has served as interim executive director since June.
 
Dr. Peart is a seasoned business leader and strategic planner within both the not-for profit and for-profit sectors. Prior to joining the YWCA, she has developed and directed organizational programs, leaders and management teams, and taught at the university level. In addition to her Doctorate in Psychology, she has extensive business experience. Her expertise is in understanding the functioning of organizations and the people within them. Her recent positions include Vice President of Program for Lutheran Family Services and consultant for the Gallup Organization.

Dr. Peart will officially start with YWCA Omaha Sept. 2.

Midlands Nonprofit Summit Announced
Endow Nebraska, the Human Services Federation and the Nonprofit Association of the Midlands are proud to present the second annual Midlands Nonprofit Summit. This year’s event will be held on Thursday, October 30, 2008 at the Embassy Suites, 12520 Westport Parkway, LaVista, NE, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

For the past few years, the Nonprofit Association of the Midlands, the Human Services Federation, and Endow Nebraska have been working to ensure that the many nonprofits in the region have the tools and resources they need to operate and thrive. For the second year, these efforts will culminate at the “Nonprofit Summit: Innovative Leadership.”

Participants will be able to attend workshops and panels discussing a wide range of important topics that affect nonprofit organizations such as, successful employees, fundraising, strategic planning, board governance, accountability, cultural competency, and other pertinent sector issues. 

This year’s keynote speaker will be Heather McLeod Grant, co-author of “Forces for Good: The Six Practices of High Impact Nonprofits”, which was named one a top ten books of 2007 by the Economist.  McLeod Grant is and advisor to the Center for Social Innovation at Stanford University and is a former McKinsey and Company consultant.

Humanities Council Awards Grants Totaling $10,615
The Nebraska Humanities Council (NHC) recently awarded a $1,500 grant to Analog of Omaha, for a series of pre-concert talks during “ARTSaha! 2008: Set Sail for the Sun,” a new music festival Sept. 3-13 in Omaha.

Various artists will give talks about programs at the festival, which will celebrate the life of legendary German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen. Stockhausen, who died Dec. 5, would have been 80 years old on Aug. 22. The talks will put the work of Stockhausen and other modern composers in a historical context for audiences, and a question-and-answer session will be taped and archived for future study.

The NHC recently announced eight grants totaling $10,615. Other grant recipients and the amount of each grant: The Angels Company, Lincoln, $1,500 for “The Life of a Concert Company: Genevieve Fodrea.” Administrative Services, Lincoln, $1,500 for “World Day on the Mall,” a celebration of diversity Sept. 10 on Centennial Mall. Lentz Center for Asian Culture, Lincoln, $1,500 to create a catalog for the exhibition “The Daily Arts of Bhutan,” running Sept. 5 through Dec. 14 at the Lentz Center.  Nebraska’s Official Soft Drink Heritage Foundation, $1,296 to create Spanish-language brochures and posters for the Kool-Aid Days Festival Aug. 8-10 in Hastings. Nebraska Archeological Society, Lincoln, $1,175 for the 2008 Artifact Show, Aug. 23 in Seward. Board of Regents, University of Nebraska, $1,170 for the Richard Wright Symposium, Sept. 18-19 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln City Campus. John G. Neihardt Foundation, Bancroft, $974 for the 43rd annual Neihardt Day Celebration, Aug. 3 at the J.G. Neihardt State Historic Site in Bancroft.

Applications Available for La Vista Community Foundation’s 2008 Fall Granting Cycle
The La Vista Community Foundation is accepting applications for its 2008 fall granting cycle. Applications may be downloaded at the Foundation’s Web site, http://www.lavistacommunityfoundation.org. They are also available at La Vista City Hall and the La Vista Public Library.

Completed grant applications are due by noon on Sept. 12. They may be submitted electronically to aodorisio@leslieklinelukas.com. Applications may also be mailed or delivered to the following address:

Since its inception in 1999, the La Vista Community Foundation has improved the lives of thousands of residents through its grant-making program. The Foundation makes grants to organizations, projects and initiatives in the areas of youth and senior services, arts and cultural activities, civic improvement, health, social welfare, education and recreational facilities. Grants are available in the fall and spring.


Big Barn Bash to Benefit Project Nightlight Announced
Project Nightlight’s annual fundraiser, Big Barn Bash, will be held Friday, October 3rd at the corner of 152nd and Military Rd.  This major event will raise funds to sustain the coming year of room projects.  From gaming tables to live music and auction, this night will not be your average fundraiser.  Cocktails and gaming will be from 6-8 pm, a barbeque buffet and live auction at 8 pm, and music and dancing at 8:30 pm.

Project Nightlight is a philanthropic organization that is dedicated to giving chronically ill children a bedroom makeover to help facilitate their healing.  Often these children leave the hospital, return to their homes and their rooms have nothing but a mattress on the floor and a couple of old dressers.  Their goal is to give them a special place to call their own.  For more information, please call 496-2230.
Walk to Prevent Suicide to be Held
Omaha’s 4th annual Out of the Darkness Community Walk to Prevent Suicide will be held September 14th on the Riverwalk Trail.  This is a no entry fee walk to bring awareness about depression, mood disorders, and suicide prevention.  Participants may set fund-raising goals which will support the Nebraska Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, which was sanctioned June 2008.  With the formation of the chapter, half of the net profit from the walk will come back to the Nebraska chapter to be used in AFSP approved programs in the local communities.
